Fiji’s Bold Vision: 90% Renewable Energy by 2035!

Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has set a bold goal to provide clean and affordable energy solutions, aiming for at least 90 percent of its energy needs to come from renewable sources by 2035. Acting EFL Chief Executive Bobby Naimawi stated that the company is focused on identifying and developing sustainable and economically viable projects to reach this target.

One significant initiative currently under review is the Namosi Hydro-electric scheme. EFL is conducting a feasibility study to explore the potential of this project. Preliminary investigations indicate that multiple small hydro-electric schemes could be established in the Namosi region, and EFL is building on previous research.

Naimawi mentioned that the next steps will depend on the findings of the feasibility study, which evaluates three potential hydro-power sites in Namosi, along with the necessary high-voltage infrastructure for power transmission to larger electricity demand centers.

The feasibility study will analyze the technical feasibility, commercial viability, and possible environmental and social impacts of the proposed hydro-power facilities and associated infrastructure. Initiated in 2024, the study is expected to take up to two years and is divided into two phases:

Phase 1 involves scoping and options analysis to explore various project scenarios. Phase 2 will focus on a shortlist of project options that will undergo thorough technical, environmental, and social assessments.

During the feasibility study, the extent of the hydro-power scheme’s impact will be evaluated according to international standards and best practices, which include assessing social and economic benefits. Naimawi emphasized the importance of ensuring that the study identifies projects that avoid flooding populated or culturally significant areas.

He reassured that there will be no relocations of existing communities or villages due to past hydro-power projects. The feasibility study is being conducted by consultants funded by development partners, who are closely collaborating with key stakeholders to engage those who might be affected by the potential projects.

The outcomes of the feasibility study are expected to play a crucial role in shaping Fiji’s renewable energy roadmap as outlined in the National Development Plan.
