Fiji has made significant strides in formulating its Sixth State Report under the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), as highlighted by Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran during her presentation to the CEDAW Committee. The report is the result of a comprehensive consultative process emphasizing the nation’s dedication to gender equality.

While Ms. Kiran acknowledged progress in advancing women’s rights, she also stressed the urgent need for further action. Despite women comprising nearly half of Fiji’s population, they remain underrepresented in various economic and social dimensions. The recent World Economic Forum 2024 Global Gender Gap Report ranked Fiji 128 out of 146 countries, underscoring the challenges that still exist.

Fiji’s National Development Plan recognizes the necessity of integrating gender equity and empowerment into national development strategies, highlighting ongoing issues that need addressing. The Fiji Country Gender Assessment Report published in 2023 meticulously outlines the situation of women and girls, serving as a testament to the government’s commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind.

The review of Fiji’s Sixth State Report marks a pivotal moment as it coincides with preparations to host the Pacific Technical Cooperation Session of the CEDAW Committee in April 2025. This event will be historic, as it will be the first CEDAW Committee Session to be held outside Geneva, presenting a valuable platform for Fiji to share both its accomplishments and persistent challenges related to gender equality.

The proactive steps Fiji is taking signify a hopeful outlook for the country’s women and girls, reinforcing a commitment to uplift and empower those vulnerable populations. The collaborative efforts fostered within this consultative process reflect the aspiration not only for enhancing women’s rights in Fiji but also for inspiring a ripple effect of change across the Pacific Islands.

Overall, while acknowledging existing challenges, Fiji’s dedication to fostering gender equality highlights a collective hope for a future where women and girls can thrive free from discrimination.
