Fiji is advancing its gender equality efforts with the review of its 6th State CEDAW Report and a significant stakeholder meeting held in Suva. This meeting is crucial for promoting the principles outlined in the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and is viewed as a vital step in Fiji’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that women and girls have access to their full rights and opportunities.
Eseta Nadakuitavuki, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, highlighted the importance of this meeting, noting that it signifies a key moment in Fiji’s journey towards gender equality since the country ratified CEDAW in 1995. Despite acknowledging the progress made in overcoming barriers to gender equality, she pointed out that there are still significant challenges that must be addressed moving forward.
Nadakuitavuki urged for transformative actions, calling on the government to handle the review process with transparency and to focus on eliminating obstacles that prevent women from fully participating in society. She emphasized that the government’s commitment to CEDAW is not only crucial for women’s rights but also essential for the broader objectives of national development.
In addition, this review process coincides with Fiji preparing to host the Pacific Technical Cooperation Session of the United Nations CEDAW Committee in April 2025. This event marks a historic moment, as it will be the first CEDAW Committee Session held outside Geneva, which demonstrates the Pacific region’s determination to enhance women’s rights and foster gender equality.
The upcoming gathering will provide Fiji with the opportunity to showcase both its achievements and challenges in promoting gender equality while stimulating important discussions on advancing women’s rights throughout the region. This proactive approach illustrates the optimism and commitment of Fiji in paving the way for a better future for women and girls, embodying a hopeful outlook for the advancement of gender rights locally and across the Pacific Islands.
The overall efforts to review the 6th State CEDAW Report and prepare for the significant 2025 session reflect Fiji’s steadfast dedication to fostering gender equality and striving towards a future in which every woman and girl is empowered and free from discrimination.
