Fiji’s Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, Penioni Ravunawa, presented the country’s priorities for sustainable health development at the 37th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting (CHMM) held at the Hilton Geneva Hotel and Conference Centre. This one-day event, preceding the 78th World Health Assembly, gathered health leaders to focus on the theme, “Investing in Health: Sustainable Financing for an Equitable Commonwealth.”
Ravunawa highlighted the critical need for sustainable financing to strengthen health systems, especially in response to growing concerns over non-communicable diseases (NCDs), mental health issues, and the unique challenges faced by small island developing states (SIDS). Fiji’s calls to action included:
– Enhancing partnerships with global organizations like the WHO and SPC to bolster NCD, mental health, and HIV prevention programs.
– Providing technical support geared toward early intervention and detection services, with a keen focus on SIDS.
– Advancing digital health solutions to improve care accessibility in remote and underserved regions.
– Securing greater investments from development partners, such as the ADB and the Global Fund, to enhance health resilience across the Pacific.
Ravunawa’s address underscores Fiji’s dedication to cooperative solutions for equitable healthcare across the Commonwealth. This proactive engagement reinforces a hopeful commitment towards strengthening health infrastructures and ensuring that all citizens receive the care they need.
Moreover, similar sentiments were echoed in earlier discussions regarding the significant challenges posed by NCDs in Fiji, where they account for 80% of deaths, particularly affecting the working population. The need for comprehensive strategies, including modernization of healthcare facilities and upskilling of healthcare workers, was emphasized as essential for advocating a healthier future for Fiji.
The collaborative focus on health investment signifies a critical step toward not just improving public health, but also fostering economic stability in the region. Through continued partnerships and dedicated efforts, there is optimism for a stronger, healthier Fiji.
