Fiji’s Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, engaged in a significant bilateral discussion with Dr. Najat Maalla M’jid, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Violence Against Children. This meeting took place during the ongoing Pacific Child Wellbeing Summit at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in Suva.

The focus of their conversation revolved around enhancing Fiji’s frameworks for child protection. Key issues discussed included the enactment of Fiji’s Child Justice Act and the Child Care and Protection Act. They also looked into strategies promoting positive parenting and the creation of a National Action Plan aimed at preventing and addressing child abuse.

Additionally, the importance of Child-Responsive Budgeting was emphasized to ensure that adequate financial resources are allocated for child welfare initiatives. Minister Kiran underlined the necessity for collaboration not only among governmental bodies but also with civil society and international organizations to advance the cause of child protection in Fiji.

This meeting aligns with Fiji’s broader commitment to safeguarding the welfare of its children, which was also spotlighted in a previous article discussing Fiji’s future participation in the inaugural Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children in Bogotá, Colombia. During this upcoming conference, the delegation, led by Minister Lynda Tabuya, plans to advocate for initiatives such as care blogs, which provide critical support to caregivers while enhancing child welfare.

These actions reflect a growing awareness and proactive stance in Fiji regarding the importance of creating a safe and nurturing environment for children, ultimately paving the way for more effective strategies and collaborative efforts aimed at improving overall child welfare in the Pacific region.

Together, these initiatives and discussions signify an optimistic movement towards a comprehensive approach to child welfare, establishing a hopeful outlook for the future of children in Fiji.
