A national cybersecurity strategy aimed at establishing a cyber-safe and resilient Fiji is set to be unveiled this year, as announced by the Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, MSMEs, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica. Speaking at a recent event in Suva, he emphasized that a public consultation will take place across the nation prior to the release of this critical policy, reflecting the significant progress made in the realm of digital economy and trade despite its delayed finalization.

The strategy will outline policies that prepare Fiji to navigate cybersecurity challenges in the digital era, aiming for long-term security and resilience. Minister Kamikamica acknowledged Australia’s role in Fiji’s cybersecurity development, especially in sharing valuable experiences from Australia’s 2023 Cybersecurity Strategy. He expressed gratitude towards the Australian Ambassador for Cyber Affairs, Brendan Dowling, for the assistance provided by embedding a team member within Fiji’s Ministry of Communications.

Moreover, Fiji and Australia are collaborating to establish a Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) which will serve as a digital first responder for significant cyber incidents. This initiative parallels the functioning of the Australian Cybersecurity Centre, promising swift assistance to Fiji’s critical sectors in the event of cyberattacks.

Fiji, under its commitment to enhancing regional and international cybersecurity efforts, has been an active participant in initiatives such as the Laqatoi Declaration—a strategic plan to be endorsed at the upcoming Pacific ICT meeting—and the UN Open-Ended Working Group aimed at shaping global cyberspace governance. The nation has also recently acceded to the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime, reinforcing its dedication to combating cyber threats.

Overall, Fiji’s multifaceted approach to cybersecurity, highlighted by the anticipated national cybersecurity strategy and ongoing collaboration with Australia, offers hope for a secure digital environment. It positions Fiji as a proactive leader in the Pacific region’s efforts to ensure safety in the burgeoning digital landscape. The joint endeavors between nations strengthen not only Fiji’s cybersecurity framework but also contribute to a collaborative spirit among Pacific Island nations, fostering a resilient and interconnected digital future.
