Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL) has outlined its ongoing efforts concerning the Namosi hydro-electric feasibility study. In a recent statement, EFL’s acting chief executive officer Bobby Naimawi announced a goal to provide clean and affordable energy solutions for Fiji, aiming for at least 90 percent of the country’s energy needs to be met through renewable sources by 2035.
To meet this ambitious target, EFL, in collaboration with various international development partners, is focused on identifying and advancing multiple sustainable and economically viable projects. The Namosi hydro-electric scheme is one of these initiatives currently undergoing investigation, with EFL conducting a feasibility study.
Preliminary investigations have shown that several small hydro-electric schemes could be established in the Namosi region, and EFL is building on these earlier findings. The outcome of the feasibility study will shape EFL’s next steps.
The study is evaluating three potential hydro-power sites in Namosi, along with the necessary high-voltage power evacuation infrastructure to connect Namosi to major electricity demand areas. It will review the technical feasibility, commercial viability, and the environmental as well as social impacts of the proposed hydro-power facilities and related infrastructure.
The feasibility study started this year and is anticipated to be completed within two years.
