In a concerted effort to enhance disaster preparedness in Fiji, the Fiji Business Disaster Resilience Council, in collaboration with the National Disaster Risk Management Office, has launched new disaster awareness materials in Suva. This initiative specifically targets students from years 9 to 13 and their families, aiming to cultivate a strong culture of readiness as the cyclone season approaches.
Inoke Raikoso, a Senior Education Officer from the Ministry of Education, addressed the significant challenges in promoting a culture of disaster preparedness. He highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by many communities and the aging infrastructure in schools, some of which date back to the 1800s. These factors complicate the implementation of effective educational outreach regarding disaster preparedness.
Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Disaster Management, Isoa Talemaibua, emphasized the importance of the distribution of 10,000 calendars and educational materials. He stated that these resources not only serve as reminders for families to prioritize disaster preparedness but also reflect a strong commitment to enhancing community resilience. The distribution signifies a vital partnership that aims to ensure every individual, family, and business in Fiji is better prepared for potential disasters.
Over the past year, more than 50,000 homes and nearly 70,000 students have benefited from similar campaigns, and plans are in place for an additional 50,000 households to receive these materials this year.
