The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) is undertaking an extensive preliminary survey in Fiji to establish a National Alcohol and Other Drugs Recovery Center. This initiative, as revealed by the Ministry of Health, aims to tackle the increasing substance abuse crisis by providing tailored support for individuals battling addiction.
The proposed recovery center will offer direct assistance to individuals with substance use disorders, prioritizing vulnerable populations such as women, youth, and children. Furthermore, it will provide resources for healthcare professionals addressing these challenges.
The Ministry of Health emphasizes the importance of community involvement, planning to consult with both affected individuals and the broader public to ensure the center’s services are appropriately aligned with the needs of those it aims to support. Permanent Secretary Dr. Jemesa Tudravu highlighted the urgency for a dedicated rehabilitation facility, asserting that discussions surrounding the establishment of such centers have been ongoing for some time. He noted that the current system is straining, particularly at St Giles Hospital, which was originally designed for mental health treatment but is increasingly burdened with drug-related cases.
Dr. Tudravu expressed concern over the shifting focus from mental health to substance abuse in facilities meant for mental health care, stressing the need for a separate rehabilitation center to effectively manage these issues.
This initiative signals a positive step toward providing dedicated support for those affected by substance abuse in Fiji, highlighting a commitment to improving mental health care and rehabilitation services in the country. By involving the community and healthcare professionals in the planning process, the project aims to create a center that truly meets the needs of individuals struggling with addiction, fostering hope for recovery and wellbeing.
In summary, the establishment of a National Alcohol and Other Drugs Recovery Center in Fiji reflects a proactive approach to addressing substance use disorders while prioritizing the needs of the community and healthcare practitioners.
