The Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, has officially launched Fiji’s National Housing Policy for 2025-2030 at the Suva Civic Centre. This new policy aims to ensure adequate, affordable, and inclusive housing for all Fijians, reflecting the government’s commitment to align with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, specifically Sustainable Development Goal 11, which focuses on inclusive and sustainable urban environments.
During the launch, Minister Nalumisa emphasized the crucial role of the housing sector in providing shelter and security and highlighted the government’s responsibility to regulate the housing market. He pointed out that the government aims to facilitate housing assistance for low-income households that struggle to access affordable housing. The successful implementation of this policy will require collaboration across various ministries, agencies, and communities to achieve meaningful outcomes.
This launch also coincided with a Consultation Workshop on the Review of Informal Settlements, which underscores the government’s proactive approach to improving housing access. The National Housing Policy not only addresses current housing challenges but also positions Fiji to tackle issues related to rapid urbanization and climate change, as it aims to enhance the living conditions of many low-income earners, especially those in informal settlements.
The emphasis on collaboration and the development of sustainable housing solutions reflects a hopeful outlook for the future. By working together towards a common goal, the policy stands as a commitment to improving the quality of life for all citizens, fostering a more inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
