Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has set an ambitious goal to provide clean and affordable energy solutions, aiming for at least 90 percent of its energy needs to come from renewable sources by 2035.

Acting EFL Chief Executive Bobby Naimawi stated that the company is focused on identifying and developing projects that are both sustainable and economically viable to reach this target. One notable project under consideration is the Namosi Hydro-electric scheme, for which EFL is currently conducting a feasibility study.

Previous investigations have indicated that several small hydro-electric schemes could be established in the Namosi region, and EFL is building on these earlier findings. Naimawi explained that the next steps will depend on the feasibility study’s outcomes. The study evaluates three potential hydro-power sites in Namosi, along with the necessary high-voltage power evacuation infrastructure to connect to larger electricity load centers.

The feasibility study will examine the technical feasibility, commercial viability, and the environmental and social impacts of the proposed hydro-power facilities and their infrastructure.

Commencing in 2024, the study is projected to take up to two years and will proceed in two phases:

Phase 1 involves a scoping and options analysis to explore various project scenarios and arrangements. Phase 2 will focus on a ‘shortlist’ of project options, including detailed technical, environmental, and social assessments.

The feasibility study will evaluate the potential impacts of the hydro-power scheme according to international standards, emphasizing social and economic benefits. Naimawi assured that the study will prioritize the protection of populated and culturally sensitive areas, ensuring no existing settlements or villages will be displaced as a result of any hydro-power development.

Consultants, funded by development partners, are carrying out the feasibility study while closely collaborating with key stakeholders to engage with individuals who may be affected by the proposed projects. The results of this study will be crucial in shaping Fiji’s renewable energy roadmap in alignment with the National Development Plan.
