Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, recently engaged in discussions with Pio Smith, the Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), at the High-Level Regional Consultation on Financing for Development in Asia and the Pacific, held in Bangkok.
During their meeting, DPM Prasad expressed gratitude to UNFPA for its valuable assistance in the formulation of Fiji’s inaugural National Population Policy. This policy is designed to effectively address demographic changes in the nation and to ensure that population dynamics are in harmony with Fiji’s development objectives. As such, the policy is seen as crucial for influencing the country’s future growth trajectories.
Furthermore, UNFPA is eagerly anticipating Fiji’s involvement in the upcoming 58th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD), which is scheduled for April 2025. This continued collaboration highlights the importance of international partnerships in tackling population issues and achieving sustainable development goals.
In summary, the meeting underscores a commitment to strategic planning in addressing population challenges and emphasizes the potential for Fiji to take meaningful steps towards its development aspirations through informed policy-making and international cooperation. This proactive approach offers hope for a prosperous future for the nation.
