The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change is set to increase its budget allocation for the 2025–2026 financial year to better address pressing environmental and climate challenges. Permanent Secretary Dr. Sivendra Michael highlighted the rising urgency of these issues, stating, “We are absolutely expecting a budget increase.” He emphasized the ministry’s proactive approach, indicating that they are actively working in various fields to tackle the escalating problems.

Dr. Michael noted the importance of expanding the workforce to support new projects planned for the upcoming fiscal year, stressing the need for a stronger human resource base to achieve ambitious environmental outcomes. He also elaborated on initiatives such as scaling up trash boom projects aimed at preventing litter from entering waterways. “These are low-cost, high-impact solutions that prevent waste from reaching the ocean,” he explained.

In addition to these efforts, the ministry aims to enhance waste management infrastructure through innovative public-private partnerships. Dr. Michael pointed out the potential for basic interventions in public spaces, like implementing color-coded sorting bins, to facilitate responsible waste disposal. He stated, “There is so much opportunity in this space.”

This development follows previous discussions regarding the need for comprehensive reforms in Fiji’s environmental policies, including enhancing the Litter Act’s enforcement and modernizing waste management practices. Dr. Michael has been vocal about the importance of cultivating civic pride and responsible behaviors within communities to improve waste management outcomes.

The proactive measures outlined reflect a hopeful commitment to not only improving environmental conditions but also fostering a culture of responsibility among citizens. With an emphasis on collaboration and innovation, Fiji is moving towards a more sustainable future where environmental stewardship becomes a shared community value.
