Fiji’s participation in the Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025 has reached a historic milestone with 129 personnel from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) currently involved in this significant multinational military exercise hosted by the Australian Defence Force (ADF) at Shoalwater Bay Training Area in Central Queensland. This initiative reflects a deeper collaboration between Fiji and Australia, marking a pivotal moment for Pacific defence forces.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced the news during a ministerial statement to Parliament, emphasizing the importance of this engagement following his official visit to Australia from July 1 to July 7, 2025. The delegation comprised key cabinet ministers overseeing Defence, Immigration, and Policing, along with senior officials, highlighting the comprehensive cooperation between the two nations.

The participation of the RFMF in Talisman Sabre is marked as a pioneering effort under a rotational company pilot scheme—an innovative approach that enables the integration of ADF and RFMF personnel before joint field exercises. Prime Minister Rabuka characterized this collaboration as a “landmark moment” that not only enhances operational interoperability but also fosters trust and camaraderie between Fiji and Australia.

The exercise, which gathers over 30,000 personnel from 19 nations, showcases heightened regional security collaboration. Prime Minister Rabuka had the chance to observe a live offensive training demonstration during his visit, describing the experience as a profound illustration of professionalism among the troops.

Australia’s support, covering transportation, accommodation, and logistical requirements, underlines the commitment to enhancing joint military capabilities and regional security. The Prime Minister expressed hope that this rotational initiative sets a strong framework for future Pacific defence collaborations.

This exercise plays a crucial role in bolstering Fiji’s military readiness, enhancing skills, and preparing forces for emerging regional challenges. The training initiative illustrates a proactive approach to collective security in the Pacific, with an optimistic outlook for future cooperative efforts among nations.

Fiji’s growing military collaboration not only reflects its commitment to regional stability but also underscores a hopeful narrative of unity and mutual support in addressing common security challenges faced by Pacific nations.
