Fiji’s Bold Stand on Decolonisation Raises Eyebrows

The Fijian Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the regional stance of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) and the Melanesian Spearhead Group regarding decolonization and self-determination, as outlined in the UN Charter. This announcement follows Fiji’s unique position as the only UN member to oppose the implementation of the “Declaration on Granting Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.”

In an official statement, the government noted that the Fiji Permanent Mission in New York is actively working with the Secretariat to address this issue, which will be included in the Committee’s report to the General Assembly for consideration.

Fiji is one of only two Pacific Island nations represented on the “Special Committee on Decolonization,” known as “C-24,” and it has continuously advocated for decolonization efforts. Through its participation in “C-24” and the “Fourth Committee,” Fiji supports the positions taken by the Pacific Islands Forum and the Melanesian Spearhead Group, particularly in favor of the annual resolution on decolonization entitled “Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.”

On October 15, Fiji presented a joint statement from the Melanesian Spearhead Group at the plenary of the Fourth Committee, reiterating the Group’s support and updating on the regional processes concerning New Caledonia, aligning with the conclusions of the Leaders Meeting communiqué.

A new resolution introduced at the Fourth Committee on October 17 expands the scope of the annual resolution to encompass sensitive matters that extend beyond the mandate of the “C-24” and the “Fourth Committee.” This recognition highlights the importance of establishing a separate process for these significant issues.
