Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, has been appointed as the Vice Chair of the 81st session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP) after attending the General Debate in Bangkok. This assembly convened leaders and policymakers to deliberate on issues that promote inclusive and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region.

During his address, Mr. Nalumisa reaffirmed Fiji’s strong dedication to regional cooperation and sustainable development, emphasizing that collective action is essential to tackle shared challenges. He underscored climate change as the preeminent threat facing sustainable development in the Pacific, highlighting rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and extreme weather as critical issues.

He noted that Fiji’s Climate Change Act, which will be implemented in April 2025, marks a pivotal step in the country’s response to climate challenges. Mr. Nalumisa also discussed Fiji’s initiatives in economic diversification, particularly within the blue and green economy sectors, which include sustainable fisheries, renewable energy, waste management, and eco-tourism.

Additionally, Mr. Nalumisa outlined the launch of the National Housing Policy 2025–2030 aimed at enhancing access to affordable and inclusive housing, alongside necessary regulatory reforms and expanded social housing programs. He stressed that sustainable urbanization is a top priority for the Fijian government, with plans for climate-resilient infrastructure and improved urban planning, especially in informal settlements.

Moreover, he called for increased technical support and funding from development partners, emphasizing that inclusion is central to Fiji’s development strategy, extending social protection and essential services to marginalized groups such as women, youth, persons with disabilities, and rural populations.

He also highlighted Fiji’s National Digital Strategy 2025–2030, which aims to strengthen digital infrastructure and innovation across the nations, particularly benefiting rural communities.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Nalumisa called for a commitment to multilateralism and regional solidarity, magnifying the importance of partnerships in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This comprehensive approach reflects Fiji’s ongoing dedication to fostering a resilient, equitable, and climate-conscious Asia-Pacific region.

It is noteworthy that Mr. Nalumisa is the third Fijian to take on such a significant role within the UN-ESCAP Commission, following past representatives who have also underscored Fiji’s commitment to addressing both regional and global challenges.

Fiji’s proactive role in these discussions showcases its commitment to cooperation and sustainable growth, positioning the nation as a significant player on international platforms.
