Fiji’s Bold Stance Against Domestic Violence: What You Need to Know

The Fijian government has reinforced its commitment to addressing domestic and gender-based violence, urging all ministries and civil service departments to take immediate action when such cases are reported. This directive was issued by Permanent Secretary for Civil Service, Parmesh Chand, who emphasized the expectation for civil servants to adhere to the Civil Service Code of Conduct by exemplifying values like care, diligence, and respect.

In a circular dated May 5, Mr. Chand stated, “We strongly encourage all Civil Servants to refrain from any form of violent behaviour, especially actions that could result in serious harm or fatality.” He invited anyone experiencing domestic violence or aware of someone in such situations to reach out for assistance from the appropriate agencies.

The Fiji Civil Service has declared a zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of violence, including domestic and gender-based violence. Any violations of this policy will provoke swift disciplinary action, ensuring that cases are managed with procedural fairness and natural justice.

This conscious effort comes in the wake of recent tragic incidents, including the death of civil servant Sainimere Tuinasakea, which highlights the urgent need for improved awareness and preventive measures against domestic violence in Fiji.
