The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection is intensifying efforts to promote awareness of the 1560 Domestic Violence Helpline across Fiji to encourage individuals to seek help. Minister Sashi Kiran stated that the ministry is dedicated to enhancing public understanding and providing support for survivors of domestic abuse through various outreach initiatives.

These campaigns encompass a range of activities aimed at increasing knowledge regarding domestic violence and available support services. The ministry is actively collaborating with civil society groups, healthcare professionals, faith-based organizations, and community leaders to disseminate informational materials statewide.

A significant aspect of this initiative includes the creation of referral pathway documents for responders, such as police and social workers, to effectively manage and refer cases of gender-based violence. The ministry is also utilizing talkback radio shows in primary languages—iTaukei, Hindi, and English—to reach diverse audiences, particularly in rural areas.

Past reports highlight that the 1560 Domestic Violence Helpline managed to receive close to 1,000 calls in 2024, indicating a growing public awareness regarding the seriousness of domestic violence. Such awareness is believed to be particularly bolstered during campaigns like the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, showcasing the ministry’s commitment to addressing this critical issue.

Despite the progress, Minister Kiran acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly in reaching isolated communities, and indicated that further efforts are required to ensure that no one is left without access to crucial information and support services.

The helpline remains a confidential, free service open 24/7 for anyone in need, reinforcing the message that help is always accessible. This focus on increasing awareness and community participation underscores a hopeful approach towards combating domestic violence, with the potential for significant societal change in fostering safe relationships and support for victims.
