Authorities in Fiji are ramping up efforts to enhance road safety as part of a public awareness initiative aimed at promoting responsible road use. This campaign is spearheaded by the Labasa Traffic Police in collaboration with the Land Transport Authority of Fiji and arises from alarming statistics highlighting an increase in road fatalities.

In 2024, the Northern Division noted a troubling total of 13 road fatalities, four of which were specifically linked to the Labasa area. Other significant incidents include three fatalities in Seaqaqa, four in Savusavu, and one each in Nabouwalu and Taveuni. These figures highlight the pressing need for immediate action to improve road safety across the region.

Deputy Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, emphasized the importance of this awareness initiative, which will be executed through routine traffic stops and dedicated sessions aimed at instilling a sense of responsibility among road users. The program is currently being piloted in Labasa but is poised for expansion throughout the Northern Division as authorities strive to curb the rising incidence of road accidents.

The campaign aims to increase accountability among users, improve public education on safe driving practices, and ultimately contribute to a decline in road accidents, thereby saving lives. This proactive approach not only highlights the importance of community involvement in safety measures but also represents a hopeful initiative towards fostering a culture of safety on Fiji’s roads.

As community support plays a crucial role, this endeavor may pave the way for a significant turnaround in road safety statistics, creating a safer environment for all road users.
