Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has set a bold goal to provide clean and affordable energy solutions, aiming to derive at least 90 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2035.

To reach this target, Acting Chief Executive Bobby Naimawi indicated that EFL is actively identifying and developing sustainable and economically feasible projects. One of the key initiatives is the Namosi Hydro-electric scheme, which is currently undergoing a feasibility study.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that multiple small hydro-electric schemes could be established in the Namosi area, and EFL aims to build upon these findings. The feasibility study will evaluate three potential hydro-power sites in Namosi and assess the necessary high-voltage power evacuation infrastructure extending to major electricity load centers.

The study will analyze the technical feasibility, commercial viability, and environmental and social implications of the proposed hydro-power facilities and their associated infrastructure. Commencing in 2024, the feasibility study is projected to span two years and will unfold in two phases:

Phase 1 will focus on scoping and options analysis, exploring various project scenarios. Phase 2 will narrow down a shortlist of project options for more detailed technical, environmental, and social assessments.

The feasibility study aims to evaluate the potential impacts of the hydro-power scheme according to international standards, examining both social and economic advantages. Naimawi emphasized that the study will prioritize avoiding any inundation of populated or culturally sensitive areas and will ensure that existing settlements or villages will not need to be relocated.

Consultants, supported by development partners, are conducting the study and are actively engaging with stakeholders to gather input from those who may be affected by the proposed projects. Naimawi stated that the study’s findings will play a critical role in shaping Fiji’s renewable energy strategy in alignment with the National Development Plan.
