Fiji’s Bold New Strategy: Navigating Security Challenges Ahead

The Fiji National Security and Defence Review (NSDR) aims to provide a strategic framework to help Fiji address various challenges that may threaten its sovereignty and stability. During the launch event at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua highlighted that the current security landscape is influenced by issues such as cyber threats, climate change, transnational crime, and geopolitical pressures.

He emphasized the need for Fiji to adopt an agile and proactive stance in response to these challenges. A key component of the NSDR is its advocacy for a comprehensive approach to security, engaging all levels of government and society. In this model, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Force have crucial roles, but they are expected to collaborate with various government agencies, civil society, and the private sector, reinforcing that national security is a collective responsibility that involves everyone.

The Editorial Board that provided expertise for this review includes Professor Satish Chand (Chair), Associate Professor Shailendra Singh, Assistant Professor Ana Rokomokoti, and NSDR Independent lead Jim Sanday. The data for the NSDR will be primarily gathered from consultations with communities, with contributions from both government and civil society.
