The Fiji National Security and Defence Review (NSDR) aims to create a strategic framework that addresses the complex challenges jeopardizing Fiji’s sovereignty and stability. During the NSDR’s launch at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua emphasized that the contemporary security landscape is fraught with issues such as cyber threats, climate change, transnational crime, and geopolitical pressures.
Tikoduadua highlighted the necessity for Fiji to adopt an agile and proactive stance in the face of these challenges. A pivotal aspect of the review is the promotion of a comprehensive approach to security that involves the entire government and society. Within this framework, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Force are critical, but their collaboration with other government entities, civil organizations, and the private sector is equally essential.
National security, according to Tikoduadua, is a collective responsibility that involves everyone. The Editorial Board contributing their expertise to this review includes Professor Satish Chand (Chair), Associate Professor Shailendra Singh, and Assistant Professor Ana Rokomokoti, alongside NSDR Independent lead Jim Sanday. The development of the NSDR will also involve community consultations where government and civil society will provide crucial data.
