Fiji’s Bold New Foreign Policy: A Blueprint for Global Engagement

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that Fiji’s Foreign Policy Water Paper adopts a comprehensive national approach that encompasses all aspects of policy, both domestic and international.

During a speech in Parliament, Rabuka emphasized that the policy acknowledges that Fiji’s security and prosperity hinge on a clear understanding of its national interests and values, as well as the most effective ways to advance them.

He described the policy as a reflection of how Fiji perceives itself and its desired image to the world. One of the key initiatives outlined is the promotion of the Ocean of Peace, which Rabuka claims represents Fiji’s most significant contribution to maintaining peace and security in its region and the broader Indo-Pacific.

Rabuka pointed out that the White Paper articulates Fiji’s identity and values, defining the nation’s beliefs and principles. It also lays out the government’s approach to executing Fiji’s foreign policy, detailing the systems and resources necessary to enhance the unified efforts of the government.

The Prime Minister further noted that the contents of the White Paper are incorporated in Chapter 3 of Fiji’s National Development Plan and serve as a proposed response to the ongoing National Security and Defence Review.

He asserted that these components establish the foundational strategy for the government to pursue Fiji’s strategic and economic goals while bolstering social cohesion.
