The Cabinet has approved the National Fisheries Policy for 2024–2028 in Fiji. This policy outlines a strategic framework aimed at managing the fisheries and aquaculture sectors in the country, prioritizing sustainability, economic development, and food security.

The policy presents targeted strategies for various sectors, including:

– Offshore Fisheries: Development of management plans, updating legislation, fostering industry growth, and conducting strategic research.
– Aquaculture: Promotion of sustainable practices, modernization of legislation, and adoption of environmentally friendly methods.
– Coastal and Inland Fisheries: Emphasis on community-based management, legislative updates, and support for small-scale fisheries.
– Cross-Sectoral Issues: Addressing areas such as marine spatial management, involvement of gender and youth, environmental policies, and the relationship with tourism.

This policy emerges from comprehensive consultations with stakeholders and is aligned with national goals and global commitments.
