Fiji’s Bold New Blueprint for National Security

The Fiji National Security and Defence Review (NSDR) is a strategic initiative designed to help Fiji address the various complex challenges that jeopardize its sovereignty and stability.

During the launch of the NSDR at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua emphasized that today’s security environment is fraught with issues such as cyber threats, climate change, transnational crime, and geopolitical pressures. He stressed the importance of Fiji being adaptable and proactive in the face of these challenges.

A key focus of the review is the promotion of an inclusive approach to security, advocating for collaboration across government and society. Tikoduadua highlighted that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Force have crucial roles, but their effectiveness hinges on cooperation with other government bodies, civil society, and the private sector. “National security is not the responsibility of a single entity—it is a shared responsibility that touches all of us,” he stated.

The Editorial Board contributing their expertise to this review includes Professor Satish Chand (Chair), Associate Professor Shailendra Singh, Assistant Professor Ana Rokomokoti, and NSDR Independent lead Jim Sanday. The consultations with communities will enable government and civil society to gather essential data for the NSDR.
