Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has asserted that the Coalition Government is committed to tackling pornography and is considering the possibility of banning certain websites if deemed necessary.
During a recent update in Parliament regarding the National Taskforce to Address Pornography, Kamikamica highlighted that the taskforce’s first meeting delved into the significance of international cooperation and enhancing legal frameworks to safeguard children from online sexual exploitation.
He noted that the members examined current child protection laws and emphasized the need for more comprehensive strategies to meet the challenges posed by the digital landscape.
Kamikamica detailed the establishment of three working groups, each tasked with specific objectives aligned with the taskforce’s overall aims.
The first group will concentrate on policy, legislation, governance, and criminal justice, chaired by the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection. The second working group, led by the Online Safety Commission, will focus on survivor support, empowerment, and societal culture. The third group, which will address industry and technology responses, is chaired by the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji.
“To ensure our initiatives are effective, the taskforce will implement strong monitoring and evaluation mechanisms,” stated Kamikamica. “We will create feedback channels for the community to contribute to our efforts, making sure we address the needs of our citizens.”
He added that the next meeting of the National Taskforce is set for this month, during which the working groups will share their findings and discussions will continue to confront the issue of pornography use in Fiji comprehensively.
Kamikamica reiterated in Parliament the seriousness of their approach, stating, “We are indeed considering the banning of certain sites if necessary.”
