Minister for Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau has expressed his endorsement for the implementation of drug testing for drivers in Fiji, labeling it as a significant advancement for public safety. During a media appearance, he emphasized that the testing should occur either as a mandatory requirement or through random checks by the Lands Transport Authority (LTA).

Minister Tuisawau stated, “This needs to happen through various stages, be it during the driving test or while in driving school. There is definitely a need for random testing in collaboration with enforcement agencies like the police to enhance road safety.”

He acknowledged the troubling rise of drug use and its effects on driving safety, asserting that the proposed initiative would help keep impaired drivers off the roads. “I don’t see anything negative about it; it should yield positive results. Drivers will be aware of these regulations and will likely refrain from drug use to avoid prosecution and losing their licenses,” he added.

Tuisawau highlighted that speeding is a major factor contributing to accidents in Fiji, often linked to substance abuse. “Data suggests that some accidents stem from excessive speed, influenced by drug use and reckless behavior,” he noted. In light of this, the minister reiterated the necessity of stringent measures to tackle drug-related issues on the roads effectively.

The initiative aligns with previous proposals from last year, where the LTA explored mandatory drug testing for both current and new drivers, reflecting a comprehensive approach toward improving road safety.

Moreover, similar efforts have been noted in the transport sector, particularly within the taxi industry, where the LTA plans to introduce random drug testing akin to breathalyser tests, a method that has garnered support from various stakeholders. The Labasa Taxi Association has expressed optimism that such measures could significantly reduce drug use among drivers, exemplifying the collective effort to enhance public safety in Fiji.

In sum, the push for drug testing not only signifies a proactive step towards safeguarding the public but also fosters a culture of accountability within the transportation sector, potentially leading to safer roads and improved trust in public transport services.
