The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has launched a public consultation aiming to transform the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) into an independent statutory body. This initiative is intended to enhance the NRSC’s autonomy, enabling it to better fulfill its road safety mandate. LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa acknowledged the significant historical role of the NRSC since its inception in 1995, which was created under the Act of Parliament No.18 in 1994 to implement effective road safety policies.
The NRSC had previously merged with the LTA in 2010 to streamline operations. However, this integration was met with challenges, as the LTA’s primary focus on regulatory enforcement overshadowed the critical need for road safety education and awareness efforts. Rokosawa stated that restoring the NRSC’s independence is crucial as it allows for a dedicated focus on promoting safer roads across Fiji.
This initiative is particularly relevant against the backdrop of increasing road incidents, prompting the LTA to reinforce its commitment to road safety. Following a recent serious accident involving 13 students, the LTA has been under pressure to intensify road safety education and ensure strict enforcement of traffic laws. Efforts to enhance road safety are vital, especially as Fiji prepares for increased traffic during the festive season, characterized by a heightened risk of reckless driving.
The push to ensure better road safety practices reflects a collective responsibility among drivers and authorities to prioritize the well-being of all road users. Enhanced measures for traffic enforcement, driver education, and public awareness campaigns signal a hopeful direction for improving road safety in Fiji.
