Fiji is taking significant steps to transform its digital landscape with the introduction of the National Digital Strategy, which aims to increase the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector’s contribution to the country’s GDP from 4.2% to 10% by 2030. This ambitious initiative is expected to create 40,000 jobs and attract over US$100 million in foreign investment, as announced by Permanent Secretary for Communications, Shaheen Ali, during the National Cybersecurity Strategy Consultation for 2025–2026.

A critical component of the strategy is strengthening cybersecurity, which is vital for fostering a safe digital environment necessary for economic growth and enhancing investor confidence. Ali emphasized that digitalisation and cybersecurity are intertwined, stating, “Without strong cybersecurity, connectivity is vulnerable.”

The upcoming National Cybersecurity Strategy will address various challenges posed by cyber threats, which have become increasingly complex and threatening to national security and economic stability. The government aims to implement effective measures to combat these threats, ensuring the maturation of Fiji’s cybersecurity framework.

The National Digital Strategy aligns well with previous efforts to establish Fiji as a regional digital hub and includes key components such as enhancing digital infrastructure, promoting digital inclusion, and fostering innovation. It looks towards a digitally inclusive future that holds potential for equitable economic growth, particularly for underserved communities across the nation.

Ultimately, Fiji’s proactive approach reflects a hopeful outlook for creating a robust digital economy, setting the stage for inclusive participation in the digital era. By investing in necessary infrastructures and promoting digital literacy, Fiji aims to empower its citizens and significantly improve the quality of life across the nation, paving the way for a prosperous future.
