Fiji’s Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua has recently highlighted the forthcoming National Security Strategy (NSS) in Parliament, emphasizing its role as a pivotal framework for the future of the nation’s security. This strategy, which has already gained approval from the Cabinet, signifies a significant shift from a reactive security posture to a proactive approach.

Tikoduadua conveyed that the NSS is designed to strengthen resilience within national institutions and communities, fostering a sense of inclusion and security for every Fijian citizen. He underscored that genuine security transcends the mere deployment of law enforcement and military; it is about making individuals feel valued and safe, regardless of their backgrounds.

The Minister reiterated the necessity for harmony between national security and national solidarity, noting that a fractured society tends to be unstable. This perspective reflects lessons gleaned from Fiji’s historical political disruptions.

The NSS also integrates key directives from the recent National Security and Defence Review (NSDR), aimed at tackling current threats like cybercrime and climate change. It advocates a collaborative strategy that involves military, law enforcement, and civilian sectors working in tandem. This “whole-of-government” approach not only strengthens security measures but also builds public confidence, encouraging communities to take an active role in ensuring their own protection.

With the NSS’s upcoming launch, there is a growing sense of optimism that this strategic initiative will effectively address pressing security issues while contributing to long-term national stability. The expectation is that these collective efforts will enhance Fiji’s standing both regionally and globally, while prioritizing the welfare of all citizens.

This proactive evolution in national defense reflects a dedication to fostering a safer, more equitable, and resilient Fiji, underscoring the idea that security is a shared responsibility requiring partnership across all areas of society.
