To enhance waste management, the government plans to conduct a feasibility study for the creation of a waste management authority, according to Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa. He explained that this authority would serve as a centralized organization aimed at improving the efficiency of waste collection, recycling, and disposal.
“This authority will be crucial in fostering environmental sustainability, maintaining local balance, and ensuring the implementation of consistent waste management practices across the nation,” the minister stated.
Nalumisa noted that the recently approved Western landfill project by the Cabinet is “a cornerstone of Fiji’s waste management initiatives.” He emphasized that this environmentally sustainable landfill will function as a central hub for wastewater and incorporate corporate waste treatment technologies to reduce environmental impact while aligning with national goals such as recycling and pollution reduction.
To further enhance service delivery, the government will supply seven compactor trucks to four local councils this year, with four of those trucks designated for the Nasinu Town Council.
