Fiji’s Bold Move Towards a Litter-Free Paradise

Tourism Fiji has initiated the “Bin it or Bag it” campaign aimed at fostering a litter-free environment as part of its commitment to sustainable tourism. This project emerged from the 2023 Fiji Tourism Convention and has garnered support from nearly 15 partners, which include notable hotels and resorts that have contributed more than FJ$100,000 in funding and resources.

The campaign encourages both locals and tourists to dispose of their waste responsibly, either by using waste bins available or storing it in bags for appropriate disposal later. The initiative aims to create a community-driven movement focused on environmental conservation.

To further engage the public, Tourism Fiji has teamed up with local artists to introduce a catchy jingle and illustrations featuring a character named ‘Kasikasi’ that promotes responsible waste management. Additionally, reusable bags imprinted with the campaign’s slogan will be distributed at various locations across Fiji.

Brent Hill, the Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Fiji, emphasized the shared responsibility in protecting the environment. He stated, “We are thrilled to launch the ‘Bin it or Bag it’ campaign alongside our dedicated partners. This initiative embodies our commitment to sustainable tourism practices and highlights the collective responsibility we share in safeguarding Fiji’s environment. As we roll out this initiative, we encourage all Fijians and visitors to embrace the ethos of ‘Bin it or Bag it.’”

The campaign will be widely promoted through various media channels and aligns with national sustainability objectives, in collaboration with governmental ministries. Chief Marketing Officer Srishti Narayan expressed her optimism about the campaign’s potential to unite community, industry, and government efforts in environmental conservation.
