Fiji’s Bold Move Towards 90% Renewable Energy by 2035

Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has set an ambitious goal to provide clean and affordable energy solutions, aiming for at least 90 percent of its energy needs to come from renewable sources by 2035.

Acting Chief Executive Bobby Naimawi stated that in order to meet this target, EFL is focused on identifying and developing multiple sustainable and economically viable projects. One notable initiative is the Namosi Hydro-electric scheme, which is currently undergoing a feasibility study.

Previous investigations indicated the potential for several small hydro-electric schemes in the Namosi region, a foundation upon which EFL is building. Depending on the feasibility study’s outcomes, EFL plans to determine the next steps for the project. The feasibility study is examining three potential hydro-power sites in Namosi, along with the necessary high-voltage power evacuation infrastructure needed to connect these sites to larger electricity load centers.

The study will evaluate technical feasibility, commercial viability, as well as the environmental and social impacts of the proposed hydro-power facilities and evacuation infrastructure. Initiated in 2024, the feasibility study is expected to take up to two years to complete and will proceed in two phases.

Phase 1 involves scoping and options analysis to explore various project scenarios and arrangements, while Phase 2 will delve into a ‘shortlist’ of project options, featuring detailed technical, environmental, and social studies.

The feasibility study aims to evaluate the impact of the hydro-power scheme in accordance with international standards and best practices, including analyzing social and economic benefits. Naimawi emphasized that the study will strive to prevent any inundation of populated or culturally significant areas and will ensure no existing settlements or villages are relocated due to past hydro-power initiatives.

Consultants funded by development partners are conducting the feasibility study, working closely with key stakeholders to consult with affected parties prior to any project development. The findings from this study will play a crucial role in shaping Fiji’s renewable energy roadmap as outlined in the National Development Plan.
