Fiji’s Bold Move to Save Coral Reefs: What’s Next?

Fiji is taking significant actions to protect its coral reefs and bolster communities dependent on these vital ecosystems through a newly announced National Action Plan for Coral Reef Conservation. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, in collaboration with the Wildlife Conservation Society, organized a multi-stakeholder meeting in Suva, gathering government officials, scientists, community leaders, and conservationists to develop this ambitious plan.

The meeting focused on merging scientific expertise with local knowledge to devise a practical strategy aimed at marine life conservation, food security, and enhancing the well-being of communities that rely on coral reefs. This initiative aligns closely with previous efforts such as the launch of the Fiji National Hub for Coral Reef Conservation, which aims to create a coordinated approach to safeguarding coral reefs that cover 4,550 square kilometers and host over 1,075 species of fish. The Hub, supported by the same Ministry and Wildlife Conservation Society, serves as a dynamic platform for collaboration among various sectors, including civil society, academia, and indigenous groups.
