The Ministry for Tourism and Civil Aviation in Fiji is actively focusing on promoting tourism benefits across all 14 provinces in an effort to lessen regional disparities and stimulate inclusive economic growth. With tourism already accounting for 40% of Fiji’s GDP and supporting approximately 150,000 jobs, much of this economic activity has been centralized in only four provinces. The government is now determined to broaden these opportunities to ensure greater participation from local communities in the tourism sector.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, underscored key initiatives that will drive this effort. Among these is the Na Vualiku Program, aimed specifically at fostering sustainable tourism development in Vanua Levu. This initiative includes the expansion of community-based tourism, encouraging local enterprises and cultural experiences to attract visitors to less-prominent regions.

Gavoka stated, “Our goal is to create a more inclusive tourism sector that uplifts every community and fosters balanced regional development.” He indicated that efforts will be made to enhance policies, infrastructure, and sustainability to leverage tourism for economic growth and community empowerment across Fiji’s provinces.

This strategy aligns with the larger framework of Fiji’s tourism goals, which have been shaped by ongoing challenges, including natural disasters and the global pandemic. As highlighted in prior discussions, Fiji’s tourism has shown resilience, recovering and thriving even amid adversities. The country welcomed a record number of tourists in 2023, contributing significantly to the national economy.

Furthermore, these initiatives are expected to offer long-term sustainability and ensure that growth in the tourism sector benefits every resident, setting a hopeful trajectory for all Fijians. The government is also anticipated to modernize the Civil Aviation Act, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring safety while enhancing the sector’s global competitiveness.

By emphasizing community involvement and sustainability, Fiji is paving the way for a stronger, more equitable tourism landscape that not only enriches the local economy but also contributes to the well-being of its people.
