Fiji is tackling the global shortage of cybersecurity professionals by reforming its educational framework to build a robust local talent pool. This initiative was emphasized by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, during the Fiji Cybersec Symposium 2025. He acknowledged the challenges that Pacific countries, including Fiji, face in attracting and retaining cybersecurity talent amidst rising global demand.

Kamikamica highlighted the pressing nature of cyber threats and stated that Fiji’s National Cybersecurity Strategy aims to make careers in cybersecurity appealing to young people through hands-on, practical training. According to Cisco, there is a worldwide shortfall of approximately 3.5 million cybersecurity experts, which presents significant risks to the future of global cybersecurity. In light of this, Kamikamica’s strategy includes collaboration among educational institutions, businesses, and government ministries to cultivate a skilled workforce.

Fiji’s commitment is underscored by previous endeavors to enhance its cybersecurity landscape, including the upcoming launch of a National Cybersecurity Strategy and the establishment of the National Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT). These efforts reflect a proactive approach aimed at both safeguarding the nation’s digital infrastructure and fostering regional cooperation in combating cyber threats.

With strong collaboration with international partners, such as Australia, Fiji is taking significant steps towards bolstering its cyber defenses. The focus on reforming educational curricula is a hopeful step toward training the next generation of cybersecurity professionals, ensuring that the country is better prepared to handle the complexities of the digital future. This commitment positions Fiji as a potential leader in cybersecurity within the region, inspiring neighboring nations to take similar actions to enhance their own cyber resilience.
