Fiji’s Bold Move to Combat Elder Abuse and Loneliness

Elder abuse, neglect, loneliness, and suicide among seniors are critical issues that the Fijian government is prioritizing through strategic legislative and policy changes in 2023, as highlighted by Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran. During her inaugural address to Parliament, Kiran called for a comprehensive approach to safeguard the nation’s aging population, particularly as many elderly individuals have suffered from neglect while their families seek opportunities abroad.

Kiran expressed deep concern regarding reports of elder abuse and the troubling rise in suicide rates among seniors, specifically noting that 19 elderly individuals have taken their lives from January to August of this year. She announced plans to review the National Ageing Policy and the Council of Older Persons Act 2012 with the aim of better protecting the rights and dignity of older citizens. This focus on policy reform resonates with earlier discussions highlighting the need for increased community support for seniors.

In an effort to combat loneliness, which is a significant factor in the emotional and mental well-being of the elderly, Kiran proposed the establishment of safe spaces nationwide. These communal areas would allow seniors to gather, connect with others, and access essential services, including counseling. The minister drew inspiration from Sir Satya Bali’s legacy, who established the Ba Senior Citizens Centre in 2001, and plans to replicate such models in every district.

The government’s approach emphasizes collaboration with local leaders, district advisory councils, and faith-based organizations to create a robust support network for seniors. Such efforts are pivotal given that research indicates that regular social interactions can help mitigate incidents of elder abuse and loneliness.
