Fiji is making noteworthy advancements in its agricultural sector as part of a strategic effort to reduce the nation’s reliance on imported mushrooms, which currently average about 100 tonnes per year, valued around $1 million. The Ministry of Agriculture is at the forefront of this initiative, introducing new machinery, including 13 shredders at the Legalega Research Station in Nadi. Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu emphasized the importance of these tools, which are intended to support local mushroom farmers and enhance the quality of livestock feed.
This initiative is linked to Phase 3 of the China-Fiji Juncao Technology Project, backed by China Aid, designed to assist farmers in improving both mushroom production and the quality of livestock feed. Minister Rayalu noted that this project will not only strengthen local agricultural operations but also contribute significantly to sustainable livelihoods.
The project has already shown substantial results, having trained over 2,800 people and distributed millions of Juncao grass cuttings and mushroom substrates nationwide. It has particularly aided over 200 farmers who benefitted during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to these efforts, Fiji has successfully reduced its importation costs, achieving savings of $17 million by cutting down on fresh and chilled goods imports, while simultaneously boosting exports by 16%. This reflects a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing local production and achieving food security across the country.
The positive implications of this initiative point towards potential economic growth through agriculture. By empowering local communities and expanding opportunities, Fiji is laying the groundwork for a robust agro-economy that meets domestic needs while simultaneously reducing dependence on imported goods.
