In a dedicated effort to enhance disaster preparedness in Fiji, the Fiji Business Disaster Resilience Council, in partnership with the National Disaster Risk Management Office, launched new disaster awareness materials in Suva. This initiative is aimed at educating students from years 9 to 13 and their families about the critical importance of being prepared for natural disasters, particularly ahead of the upcoming cyclone season.
Inoke Raikoso, Senior Education Officer from the Ministry of Education, acknowledged the significant challenges associated with cultivating a culture of disaster preparedness among youth. He noted that many communities remain vulnerable, and several school infrastructures are aging, with some dating back to the 1800s. These issues complicate the effective implementation of strategies for disaster readiness.
Isoa Talemaibua, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Disaster Management, emphasized that the distribution of 10,000 calendars and educational materials represents not only organizational effort but also a celebration of collaborative partnerships focused on enhancing awareness and preparedness across communities. He stated that these materials serve as daily reminders for families to prioritize disaster preparedness, which is crucial in advancing community resilience.
Over the past year, this outreach has reached more than 50,000 homes and nearly 70,000 students, with another 50,000 households expected to receive similar resources this year.
