Fiji’s Bold Move: Tackling School Drug Issues with Spot Checks and Support

Fiji’s Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, announced plans to enhance measures aimed at combating drug issues among students by proposing spot checks in schools. This initiative reflects the growing concerns over drug peddling and usage in educational institutions.

During a recent statement, Mr. Radrodro recognized the seriousness of the drug problem within schools and detailed necessary actions to tackle the situation. “Given that consent from parents is required, we are looking at implementing spot checks to ensure the safety and well-being of our students,” he remarked.

In addition to enforcing spot checks, Radrodro revealed that school chaplains will be integrated into the educational framework to provide moral guidance and counseling services across the nation’s divisions. He acknowledged the current lack of school counselors and emphasized the need for continued efforts to provide necessary support for students facing challenges related to substance abuse.

Last year, over 3,000 students were referred to the National Substance Abuse Advisory Council due to drug-related incidents, prompting discussions about potentially introducing drug testing kits in schools.
