The Fijian government is amplifying its social protection initiatives in preparation for the impending cyclone season, aimed at safeguarding vulnerable populations. During a recent parliamentary address, Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, outlined a series of programs designed to mitigate the effects of natural disasters on affected communities.
A notable initiative is the launch of the Anticipatory Action project, a multipurpose cash transfer program expected to aid around 15,000 households during the 2024-25 cyclone season. In addition, a parametric insurance scheme is planned to provide support to approximately 2,000 individuals in areas most prone to severe weather events.
The Ministry also focuses on delivering vital financial assistance, currently supporting about 35,000 vulnerable households, over 56,000 elderly citizens through the Social Pension Scheme, and 13,000 individuals with disabilities. The eTransport program plays a critical role as well, offering transport subsidies to nearly 30,000 individuals, which includes top-ups for over 44,000 elderly people and persons with disabilities. These measures illustrate the government’s recognition of the pivotal role social protection has in bolstering community resilience during crises.
Furthermore, Minister Kiran highlighted ongoing legislative efforts to strengthen social protection structures. A thorough review of the Social Justice Act and Fiji’s Poverty Eradication Strategy Framework from 1999 is in the pipeline, alongside the development of the Fiji National Policy on Disability to ensure inclusivity for persons with disabilities in decision-making processes.
These thoughtful strategies reflect a proactive and hopeful vision for the future, aimed at enhancing social welfare for Fiji’s most disadvantaged populations. The collaboration among government entities and community organizations is pivotal in fostering resilience and improving living conditions for high-risk groups, emphasizing an inclusive approach for all Fijians.
