The Ministry of Fisheries has declared a seasonal ban on the catching, keeping, moving, or selling of Grouper (kawakawa) and Coral Trout (donu) from June 1 to September 30, 2025. This initiative, part of a broader national effort, aims to protect these vital fish species during their peak breeding period.

This four-month restriction, which was first introduced in 2019, intends to prevent overfishing and support the long-term viability of Fiji’s marine ecosystems. The Ministry emphasized the cultural and economic significance of these fish, while also highlighting their susceptibility to overharvesting due to predictable spawning behaviors. During this critical reproductive window, safeguarding their populations allows them a chance to replenish, ensuring healthier stocks for future harvesting.

The Ministry believes that by protecting these species during their breeding season, they can secure more productive fisheries and a more stable income for local fishers in the long run. This approach strives to balance ecological conservation with the livelihoods of those who depend on fishing, showcasing a commitment to sustainable practices.

Similar past initiatives have shown that such seasonal bans can effectively maintain fish populations and bolster community incomes in the long term. This ban not only serves a crucial environmental purpose but also fosters a sense of collective responsibility among fishers, vendors, and the broader community.

By adhering to these conservation measures, there is a hopeful outlook for both the marine environment and the people whose lives are intertwined with these vital resources. The Ministry’s proactive stance reaffirms its dedication to sustainable fishing practices and the preservation of Fiji’s rich marine biodiversity.
