Fiji is taking significant steps towards enhancing its democratic framework with a major overhaul of its electoral laws. This initiative was announced by Electoral Commission chairman Justice Usaia Ratuvili, who outlined key reforms that have received Cabinet approval. The planned updates include revisions to the Electoral Act 2014, the Electoral (Registration of Voters) Act 2012, and the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act 2013.
Launched on February 21, these reforms aim to cultivate a more robust electoral system. Key areas of focus involve reviewing the current legislative landscape, aligning legislation with international best practices, addressing gender imbalances in political representation, and ensuring the rights of individuals with disabilities are upheld. Engaging communities to gather public feedback and concerns is another critical component of this initiative.
Leading the reform team is former chief justice Daniel Fatiaki, who is joined by a team of experienced commissioners including Dr. Wadan Narsey, Deidre Brookes, and Seni Nabou, as well as skilled legal drafters. Their goal is to translate these reform objectives into concrete documents that will pave the way for a bill to be presented in Parliament.
This extensive review is consistent with prior recommendations from the Fiji Law Reform Commission, which emphasized the need for structural changes to improve the electoral framework, particularly to enhance the representation of women in politics. Justice Minister Siromi Turaga expressed optimism that these reforms will reinforce democratic values, boost citizen participation, and ensure a more inclusive electoral process.
