Fiji’s Bold Move: Reinventing Water Services Through Climate Action

The Coalition Government is set to enhance its international initiatives aimed at improving water services in Fiji, considering the constraints of the country’s financial resources.

Public Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlighted that energy is essential for water delivery, making the water-energy connection vital when discussing climate financing.

He emphasized the importance of making the most of available opportunities. “For Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Fiji, the provision of essential utilities, including energy and water, is crucial for the survival of our local communities. This also encompasses roads,” he stated.

Tuisawau pointed out that promoting water-energy initiatives at the grassroots level is critical for poverty reduction and can significantly impact daily life.

“We must focus on this connection when considering climate financing, particularly in evaluating natural spring or groundwater resources through advanced solar technology, such as solar-powered borehole pumps and desalination plants,” he added.

He noted that innovative programs utilizing smart national frameworks could act as a transformation driver, particularly beneficial for coastal communities.

Additionally, Tuisawau mentioned that the Coalition Government has made strides in collaborating with landowners by securing Cabinet approval for a policy framework aimed at compensating for standing trees in catchment areas.

He assured that the government will continue to engage with all stakeholders, particularly landowners, to address their concerns within the existing legal frameworks.
