Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has launched a vigorous initiative to address allegations of misconduct within Fiji’s law enforcement, particularly targeting the Counter Narcotics Bureau. In a recent interview, he emphasized that an increased number of arrests and court actions are on the horizon as part of a broader strategy to regain public trust in the police force.

“We are committed to rooting out individuals within our ranks who break the law,” Rabuka stated, acknowledging the seriousness of the situation but also urging a sensible perspective on crime, reminding that “No country has a zero crime rate.” His comments reflect the ongoing reforms the government is implementing, aimed at conjoining efforts across the community to combat drug issues and restore confidence in law enforcement agencies.

Central to this effort is Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, who has been tasked with leading these critical reforms. Under Tudravu’s leadership, there is a renewed emphasis on transparency and accountability within the police force. The appointment of a dedicated policing ministry, led by former Police Commissioner Ioane Naivalurua, is also aiding in these changes. Naivalurua has stressed that the government and law enforcement agencies must work collaboratively with communities, churches, and NGOs to create a united front against the growing issues of crime and drug use in Fiji.

Moreover, emphasizing the need for reform, Tudravu aimed to implement significant changes including a nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking, which has seen alarming rates of increase—27% in 2024 and 26% in January 2025 alone. This alarming data underscores the urgency of the situation and the importance of proactive measures, supported by community involvement.

The Fiji government’s approach illustrates a strong commitment to fostering a culture of integrity within law enforcement while urging collective efforts across various sectors of society. This initiative could prove pivotal in restoring public faith in the police and curbing the rise in drug-related crime. The future may potentially see a revitalized police force that operates with greater accountability, integrity, and community trust, aiming for a safer environment for all citizens.

In light of these developments, there remains hope that with the coalition’s strong emphasis on community engagement and dedicated police reforms, Fiji can tackle the pressing issues of crime and cultivate a safer and more stable society moving forward.
