LTA deploys portable speed cameras

Fiji’s Bold Move: Portable Speed Cameras to Combat Reckless Driving

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji is intensifying efforts to combat speeding and reckless driving by live-testing portable speed cameras throughout the country. This initiative is part of the Ministry of Transport’s commitment to reducing road fatalities and accidents, addressing the serious threat posed by drivers who violate traffic laws and endanger lives.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized the Authority’s zero-tolerance approach, stating that actions will be taken against offenders, including potential showcause proceedings that could result in the suspension or cancellation of driving licenses. He also mentioned the possibility of pursuing legal action to criminalize repeat offenders who continually disregard traffic regulations.

In the previous year, Fiji experienced 66 road fatalities, a moderate improvement from 78 in 2023, but still an alarming statistic. Speeding contributed to nearly 40 percent of these fatalities, underscoring the urgency of the new measures. Rokosawa affirmed that the introduction of portable speed cameras will enhance the LTA’s capacity to monitor and enforce speed limits, particularly in accident-prone areas.

The new cameras, which are set to be deployed in both predictable and unexpected locations, aim to foster a culture of responsible driving by ensuring that all drivers remain vigilant. The portable cameras are designed to operate effectively in varied lighting conditions, capturing vehicle speeds and recording violations instantaneously. This advanced technology will not only serve as a deterrent to speeding but will also allow for the collection of data to identify trends and inform targeted enforcement strategies.

The live testing is currently underway in the Central Division, with plans for broader implementation across other regions. This proactive step signifies a significant shift towards enhancing road safety and protecting all road users in Fiji.

By consistently monitoring speeds and ensuring that every motorist is aware of the stringent enforcement, the LTA aims to cultivate safer driving behaviors across the nation, ultimately reducing accidents and saving lives. The strategic deployment of these cameras illustrates a commitment to making highways safer for everyone, paving the way for a more responsible driving culture.

In summary, Fiji’s innovative approach with portable speed cameras represents a positive step towards achieving substantial improvements in road safety and a future with fewer fatalities on the roads.
