The Fijian government is advancing its plans to establish a medicinal cannabis industry aimed exclusively at exports. This initiative is part of the effort to diversify the economy, create jobs, and carve out a significant presence in the burgeoning global market for medicinal cannabis products.
During a recent update in Parliament, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, emphasized the industry’s potential to contribute greatly to the economy. He noted the increasing global demand for medicinal cannabis and stressed the importance of developing an export-only model to broaden Fiji’s economic landscape and create new revenue sources.
Kamikamica expressed optimism about Fiji’s ability to be a leading player in the expanding global medicinal cannabis sector, suggesting that it could foster a supportive ecosystem encompassing agriculture, manufacturing, and research, thereby facilitating job creation.
The push to develop this industry aligns with Fiji’s broader economic strategy to enhance export revenues and diversify beyond traditional sectors. Since the Cabinet’s approval of the initiative in August 2023, a multi-agency taskforce comprising 12 government departments has been diligently working on the project.
Recent nationwide consultations have garnered significant public feedback, with more than 75 percent of over 500 participants supporting the legalization of medicinal cannabis. This overwhelming support, particularly from male farmers aged 36 to 45, highlights the community’s recognition of the industry’s potential to empower local populations, especially in rural and maritime areas, by generating job opportunities and fostering agricultural development.
Looking ahead, the government aims to present legislation for the medicinal cannabis industry in 2025. Although there have been challenges in the legislative review process, Kamikamica affirmed the government’s commitment to thorough and robust legislation. Security concerns regarding theft and illicit market involvement are being taken seriously, with plans to implement stringent security measures based on successful models used in countries like Australia.
The establishment of a legal medicinal cannabis industry is anticipated to enhance exports, create new jobs, and cultivate expertise in medicinal research, representing a substantial milestone for Fiji’s economy and future global market participation.
