The Fijian government is making significant strides towards establishing a medicinal cannabis industry aimed strictly at exports. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to diversify the economy, generate jobs, and position Fiji as a contender in the expanding global market for medicinal cannabis products.
During a recent update in Parliament, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, outlined the plans and confirmed that a detailed feasibility study and community consultations have been conducted. The potential economic benefits of tapping into the global demand for medicinal cannabis are substantial, as Mr. Kamikamica noted that the industry would create a thriving ecosystem that enhances agriculture, manufacturing, and research.
Notably, the government has already established a multi-agency taskforce to oversee the development of this initiative since it received Cabinet approval in August 2023. With 75% public support for the legalization of medicinal cannabis expressed in consultations involving over 500 participants, the proposal has a firm grounding in community backing. This initiative is particularly aimed at empowering local communities, especially in rural areas, leading to new job and agricultural development opportunities.
Despite some delays in the legislative process, the government is committed to finalizing the legal framework by 2025. Mr. Kamikamica assured that stringent security measures will be implemented to mitigate concerns regarding theft and illegal market involvement, drawing inspiration from successful international models.
