The Fijian government is progressing with plans to create a medicinal cannabis industry geared exclusively towards export. This initiative aims to diversify the economy, generate jobs, and position Fiji as a competitive player in the burgeoning global market for medicinal cannabis products.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, recently updated Parliament on the consultations and feasibility studies currently underway. He emphasized the significant economic opportunities presented by global demand for medicinal cannabis. According to Kamikamica, the export-only focus for this industry is intended to enhance Fiji’s economic structure and open new revenue channels.
Highlighting the rapid expansion of the global medicinal cannabis sector, Kamikamica stated, “Fiji has the potential to be a key player in this market.” He envisions a dynamic ecosystem being developed around agriculture, manufacturing, and research, leading to substantial job creation.
The establishment of this industry is part of a broader economic strategy involving the enhancement of export revenue and diversification of traditional economic sectors. Following Cabinet’s approval of the initiative in August 2023, a multi-agency task force comprising 12 government departments has been engaged in the development process.
As of October 9 to November 28, 2024, the government has conducted 17 consultations across Fiji’s Central, Western, and Northern Divisions, with over 500 participants, including community members and stakeholders, providing feedback. A strong 75 percent of this group showed support for legalizing cannabis for medicinal purposes, particularly among male farmers aged 36 to 45, who see potential for community empowerment through this industry.
Despite some delays in legislative review, Kamikamica remains committed to presenting the final bill in 2025. While acknowledging challenges related to logistics and timing, he assured that the government is dedicated to creating comprehensive legislation to ensure the industry’s success. The government will also prioritize security measures to mitigate risks associated with theft and the illicit market, drawing on successful practices from countries like Australia.
The anticipated introduction of the medicinal cannabis industry is expected to enhance export capabilities, foster job creation, and develop expertise in medicinal research, marking an important advancement for Fiji’s economy and its place in global markets.
