The Fiji Police Force, in collaboration with the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, successfully seized 600 rounds of ammunition and one firearm aboard the MV Malau vessel on March 17, 2025. This operation was confirmed by Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, who stated that a dedicated team has been assigned to investigate the case further.
Commissioner Tudravu emphasized the importance of working closely with Tongan authorities to verify the documentation accompanying the shipment. He noted, “We are liaising closely with the Tongan authorities. Right now, it is confirming and verifying the documents. We know that due diligence was done from their end; however, we are working to verify these things.”
The investigation follows allegations regarding the potential connection of the firearm to a prominent high chief, although Commissioner Tudravu declined to share such specifics, highlighting that investigations are still ongoing.
This incident underscores ongoing concerns about arms-related activities in the region, an issue that has seen similar cases investigated in the past. Previous reports noted an increase in illegal arms and their link to notable social figures, raising alarms about compliance with firearm regulations.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka praised the collaborative efforts of the Fiji Navy and the relevant authorities involved in this successful interception, reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining national security and combatting illegal trafficking through Fiji’s waters.
As investigations continue, there is hope that with diligent enforcement and community involvement in reporting suspicious activities, these operations will contribute to a safer environment for all Fijians, reinforcing the importance of vigilant border control and compliance with national laws.
